One of the most popular and suitable biomass adaptation technologies is to advance biomass into pellets. A pellet is simply a compacted form of the previous raw material, in this case biomass. To make pellets the biomass has to be free from contaminates such as stones or metal, as this can cause grave damage to the gear.
The biomass must first be reduced to a small uniform size for the pellet mill; this is usually achieved through processing through a hammer mill. The biomass is then metered into the pellet mill at a proscribed rate, and through a series of rollers is compacted through a die into pellets. A variety of different diameters of pellets can be created for various different sizes of combustion equipment.

The pellets can then be used to produce heat or electricity in either pellet stoves or boilers, or produce power through gasification. Gasification produces gas from the pellets and this gas can be used in generators.
