Fuengirola is a chief tourist resort, and has more than 8 km of attractive beaches and is only 25 minutes away from Malaga International Airport, and 50 minutes from Gibraltar International Airport.

The resort is ideal for those interested in history since it home to a fortress, now known because Sohail Castle. The inscription on the pedestal of a statue found near the castle mentions Suel as being a Roman “municipium”. Roman baths were discovered in 1961 and, close by, the remains of a Roman villa containing two sculptures, one of which is the well known “Venus of Fuengirola” exhibited in the town’s museum.

The castle was built in the mid-10th century. The city of Suel ceased to be mentioned at the commencing of the Middle Ages.
