The Horror Of Computer Data Loss
With the growth in complexity of computer files and computer storage, has cone an increase in a new genre of horror, the computer data loss horror story. Thanks to sumobackup, Ezine, and other sites, I was able to compile a sampling of stories. At the low end of horror are data losses that are replaceable, through diligent effort, so the loss is a loss of time needed to replace the data, and not actual material. The next level up is loss of wealth. A lot of data is recoverable, but amounts to a considerable investment of money to get it back. There are some very sophisticated companies, and sometimes, it is necessary to ship the hard drive to their lab and wait anguishing weeks until they are or are not able to retrieve the data.
The next level of loss includes tangible irreplaceable loss. This type of loss frequently includes sentimental material such as irreplaceable pictures of friends, relatives, weddings, and worse, deceased relatives.
The next level up is the loss of material which is not only valuable to ourselves subjectively, but is necessary material for the fulfillment of our jobs and social responsibilities. While this loss may not always hurt as much as sentimental loss, it is worse in that it’s now victimizing others. Examples of this type of loss include loss of business files, most commonly. Such a loss might potentially affect one’s standing in a company and could even potentially lead to getting fired, if the files were important enough. One story described a teacher who lost 6 months of files related to his classroom work. The files included classroom assignments, and grades of students. I f you think back, for a second to the trust you put or still place in your teachers, you can begin to imagine the severity of this loss..
But the worst story I read about, although surely not the worst, was a writer who lost files containing 20 pages of his novel that he was about to publish and on which he had worked for over 1 1/2 years. 20 pages out of 200 might not seem like a lot, but consider what the world would have missed if Herman Melveille had lost 20 pages of Moby Dick, for example.
This all goes to show how dependent we have become on the computer, and how important it is to BACK UP OUR FILES!
